Q1: How does a user access the AS/400 Operational Assistant Menu to effectively work with printers, jobs, messages, problems, change users, passwords, and System devices and to sign off the System temporarily?

 

A1: Depress the <ESC> or <SetUp/Attn> Key (depending on the keyboard).

Q2: What are the steps necessary to send a message to other users?

 

A2: Send messages from the Operational Assistant Menu.

 

  1. Press the Esc or SetUp/Attn. key (depending on the keyboard).

  2. Select #4 from the Operational Assistant Menu.

  3. Set flags to Y or N for Reply and interruption.

  4. Enter message text and name of users (press F4 key for a list).

  5. Press F10 key to send.

Q3: What assistance is available and how does a user access the assistance?

 

A3: Information Assistant Options from the Main menu #10 for System information, release information, online education, search index. Operational Assistant Menu. Press <Esc> or <Setup/Attn> key and select option 75 for the Information Assistant and Problem handling/technical support. AS/400 Help Text. Use the Fl key.

Q4: How will I know if the System is not properly started?

 

A4: Function/Data display box series of numbers are not displayed or the System attention light comes on and remains lit.

Q5: What CL command is used to turn the power off to the System?

 

A5: go power.

Q6: What are two types of IPL's and available options?

 

A6: Attended and Unattended IPL.

 

Attended IPL provides screens to permit you to change System options as part of the IPL process.

 

Unattended IPL - Using the select and enter push buttons behind the panel door on the front of the AS/400 System, select Normal mode "01 BN" then press the power button. The user profile settings determine what occurs during as unattended IPL session: Whether the AS/400 Main menu is displayed or whether another menu displays. Whether a program or procedure is run upon sign on. Whether a current library is inserted into the user's library list.

Q7: What is the significance of a display identifier? Where is it located?

 

A7: A display identifier indicates the label assigned to the terminal being used. The format is DSPnn where nn is a two-digit number. The display identifier is found in the upper right corner of the display screen on the Sign On display.

Q8: What precautions should be taken before the System is shut down?

 

A8: Send a message that interrupts all users to ask them to sign off. Verify that all users are signed off. Check batch job status. Ensure that no tapes and no disks are in the drives.

Q9: What is the safe way to power off the System and restart immediately?

 

A9: Type go power on the Command line and select Option 4.

Q10: How are spooled files created?

 

A10: Spooled files are generated by application programs, by user interface and activity such as running queries, and by the AS/400 Operating System such as job logs that describe System activity during a user's session.

Q12: Why are controllers important?

 

A12: The AS/400 uses controllers to determine where to set up specific addresses for devices. The operator specifies which controller your printer will be connected to, what particular port on the controller the printer will be attached to and what particular address on the port you will actually have the printer connected to.
